The scenario
A customer wants their logo on a black hoodie, but the file has a white rectangle behind it. Printed as-is, the hoodie would show a white box around the logo instead of just the logo.
The definition
A transparent background means the area around your design contains no color at all, so only the design itself is printed or transferred.
Which files support transparency
PNG supports transparency, and vector formats like SVG, AI, EPS and PDF can have no background at all. JPEG cannot be transparent — it always fills the background with a color.
Watch for the fake checkerboard
Some downloaded images show a gray-and-white checkerboard that is actually part of the picture. A real transparent file shows the checkerboard only in your editing software, not as part of the image.
Edges and soft effects
Shadows, glows and soft fades blend into transparency gradually. Some decoration methods handle these well, while others need solid edges. The team reviews this before production.
- Keep a clean, hard-edged version of your logo.
- Avoid low-opacity effects unless discussed.
- Let the team know the garment color.
Check the logo on the actual garment color
Place the artwork over a preview background close to the garment color. Look for white fringes, missing light lettering and a checkerboard that moves with the image. For DTF, partially transparent effects need review because the ink and adhesive process is not the same as viewing an image on a screen.
Common mistakes
- Sending a JPEG for a dark garment and expecting no background.
- Using an image with a checkerboard printed into it.
- Leaving a thin white halo around the edges after background removal.

FAQ
Can you remove my background?
Often background cleanup is possible; the team will review your file and let you know what is needed.
Does transparency matter for embroidery?
Less, because embroidery is digitized from the design shapes, but a clean file still makes digitizing easier.
Does transparency matter for DTF?
Yes. With DTF, anything in the artwork that has color may be printed, so a clean transparent background matters.
Want a clean file for a dark garment?
Upload your artwork through the quote portal and mention the garment color for review.
