What Is GSM?

Fabric weight and how it changes a garment

The scenario

A clothing brand wants a tee that feels "premium" and asks for a heavier shirt. Comparing blanks, they see numbers like 150 GSM and 240 GSM. Knowing what GSM means makes that choice much easier.

The definition

GSM stands for grams per square meter — the weight of the fabric. Higher GSM means a heavier, usually denser fabric.

How GSM changes a garment

Fabric weight affects feel and use.

  • Lighter fabrics feel soft and breathable — good for warm weather and events.
  • Mid-weight fabrics balance comfort and structure for everyday wear.
  • Heavyweight fabrics feel substantial and hold shape — popular for streetwear and premium hoodies.

GSM is not the whole story

Fiber (cotton, polyester, blends), knit, yarn and finishing also change how a garment feels and how decoration looks. Two shirts with the same GSM can feel different.

GSM and decoration

Heavier, tighter fabrics give a stable base for embroidery and prints. Very light or stretchy fabrics may need adjusted settings or smaller, lighter designs.

From fabric choice to a branded collection

A hoodie for a streetwear drop and a staff polo have different jobs. Discuss fit, fiber blend, warmth and decoration before using weight alone as the deciding factor. Custom manufacturing is project-scoped and differs from the products in the merchant POD catalog; ask GMB which path fits your collection.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing the heaviest blank for a summer outdoor event.
  • Comparing GSM across different fabric types as if they feel the same.
  • Picking a garment without considering the decoration method.
