What Is DTF Printing?

Direct-to-film transfers in plain language

The scenario

A small business needs 15 shirts with a full-color logo that has gradients and fine detail. Screen printing would need a screen for every color. DTF printing can reproduce that full-color design as a heat-applied transfer.

The definition

DTF (direct-to-film) printing prints a design onto a special film, coats it with adhesive powder, cures it, and then heat-presses it onto the garment.

How DTF works

The process has a few clear steps.

  • The design is printed onto PET film with special inks, including a white layer.
  • Adhesive powder is applied to the wet ink and cured.
  • The finished transfer is heat-pressed onto the garment.
  • The film is peeled away, leaving the design on the fabric.

Where DTF shines

DTF handles full color, gradients and fine detail without per-color screens, and works on many fabrics including cotton, polyester and blends. It is often a good fit for smaller quantities and designs with many colors.

Things to keep in mind

DTF sits on top of the fabric as a thin layer, so it feels different from ink soaked into the shirt. Follow care instructions, and send artwork with a clean transparent background.

Transfers only or finished apparel?

Buying a transfer means you or your production partner will handle pressing. Ordering decorated apparel means the garment and decoration are scoped together. Do not treat a household iron as interchangeable with a controlled heat press; use the transfer supplier’s instructions for temperature, pressure, time, peel and any finishing press.

Common mistakes

  • Sending artwork with a white background box — it may print.
  • Using tiny, thin lines that are too fine to transfer cleanly.
  • Washing hot or ironing directly on the print against care guidance.
