SVG vs EPS

Vector formats explained

The scenario

A business needs its logo on business cards, a polo and a 6-foot banner. A small PNG works for the card but falls apart on the banner. A vector file solves this, and SVG and EPS are two common types.

The definition

SVG and EPS are vector formats: they describe artwork with mathematical shapes and paths instead of pixels, so they can scale to any size without blurring.

What SVG is

SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) is a modern, open format used widely on the web and supported by most design software. It is lightweight and easy to share.

What EPS is

EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) is an older print-industry format still used by many printers, sign makers and stock-art libraries. It is commonly opened in Adobe Illustrator and similar programs.

Watch out: not every SVG or EPS is truly vector

Either format can contain an embedded pixel image. If someone places a JPEG inside an EPS, it is still a JPEG underneath. A true vector file has editable shapes and paths.

  • Ask your designer for the original AI, SVG, EPS or vector PDF.
  • Make sure fonts are outlined or included.
  • Keep a copy with the exact brand colors noted.

One logo, several production methods

Vector artwork is a reference, not a universal production file. Embroidery still needs digitizing; screen printing may need color separations; full-color print needs the right output settings. GMB can coordinate those service choices while keeping the logo recognizable across apparel, signage and promotional items.

Common mistakes

  • Renaming a PNG to .svg or .eps — it is still a pixel image.
  • Sending a vector with live fonts that the printer does not have.
  • Assuming any file from a designer is vector without checking.

Create a consistent brand with GMB

GMB connects logo design and branding with artwork preparation, apparel decoration and promotional print. A usable vector master helps carry the same identity from a business card to a banner or branded tote. Request a project quote for the design work and products you actually need.

FAQ

Is AI or PDF also vector?

Adobe Illustrator (AI) files and many PDFs are vector. A PDF can also hold pixel images, so the contents matter.

Do I need vector for embroidery?

Not strictly — embroidery is digitized either way — but clean vector artwork makes digitizing more accurate.

I don't have a vector logo. What now?

The team can review your file; recreating artwork as vector may be available as an artwork service.

Need your logo in vector?

Share your current files through the quote portal and the team will review them for print and embroidery.
