What Is Stitch Count?

How stitches relate to design complexity

The scenario

Two logos look about the same size on a polo, but one is a simple outline name and the other is a solid filled crest. The filled crest can use many times more stitches — and that changes how the job is planned.

The definition

Stitch count is the total number of stitches a machine sews to complete a design.

What makes stitch count go up

Stitch count depends on how much area is covered and how it is covered.

  • Larger designs cover more area.
  • Solid fill areas use far more stitches than outlines or satin lettering.
  • Higher density and extra underlay layers add stitches.
  • Many small details and color changes add stitches and trims.

Why it matters

More stitches mean more machine time per piece and a heavier, stiffer patch of embroidery on the garment. That is why stitch count is often considered when embroidery is quoted, and why designs are sometimes simplified for lightweight fabrics.

How to keep a design efficient

You do not have to give up your look. A digitizer can often use open fills, outlines instead of solid backgrounds, or a slightly smaller size to keep the embroidery clean and comfortable.

Design for the person wearing it

A filled logo can look impressive but feel stiff on a lightweight polo. Smaller lettering may need more room, while an open background can preserve comfort. Ask GMB to review the trade-off between coverage, legibility and garment feel before selecting the final design size.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming two logos of the same width have the same stitch count.
  • Filling a large background area that could be left as fabric.
  • Using a dense design on a thin, stretchy shirt.

Build a better embroidered logo with GMB

GMB can help plan embroidered uniforms, hats and outerwear around the logo, fabric and placement. Our digitizing and embroidery services turn your artwork into a practical stitch plan; your project quote accounts for the actual design rather than a guess based on width alone.

FAQ

How do I know my design's stitch count?

Stitch count is calculated in embroidery software once the design is digitized. The team can share it when reviewing your artwork.

Does stitch count affect price?

It can be one of the factors considered, along with quantity, garment and number of locations. Your quote reflects your actual project.

Can a high stitch count design go on a hat?

Often yes, but caps have size and shape limits, so large dense designs may be adjusted.

Wondering how your logo will stitch?

Send your artwork through the quote portal and the team will review size, detail and stitch planning with you.
