The scenario
A school club wants 30 shirts with a two-color logo, and a small business wants 12 shirts with a full-color photo design. Each project points toward a different decoration method.
The definition
Screen printing pushes ink through a mesh screen directly onto the garment, one color at a time. DTF prints a full-color design on film and heat-presses it onto the garment.
How screen printing works
Each color in the design gets its own screen. Ink is pressed through the screen onto the shirt, layer by layer, then cured. Setup takes time, so it becomes more efficient as quantities grow.
How DTF works
The whole design prints digitally onto film, so the number of colors does not add setup. That makes DTF practical for full-color designs and smaller runs.
How to choose
Think about quantity, color count, fabric and feel. The team can recommend a method once they see your artwork and quantities.
- Fewer colors and larger quantities often point to screen printing.
- Many colors, gradients or small runs often point to DTF.
- Feel matters: screen ink becomes part of the fabric surface; DTF is a thin layer on top.
Compare the complete job, not only the print
A staff program might combine a simple screen-printed tee, embroidered polos and DTF names on event shirts. Separate quantities by item and location, then ask GMB to review the whole program. No single quantity threshold guarantees the best method; artwork complexity, fabric and production scope all affect the recommendation.
At a glance
| Factor | Screen printing | DTF |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | One screen per color | No screens |
| Colors and gradients | Best with limited colors | Full color, gradients |
| Often a fit for | Larger runs, simple colors | Smaller runs, detailed art |
Common mistakes
- Assuming one method is always better.
- Choosing by price alone without considering feel and durability.
- Not sharing quantities and color count when asking for advice.
Let GMB recommend the right decoration method
GMB offers screen printing, DTF and custom apparel guidance for businesses, teams and brands. We help match artwork, garment and quantity to a practical production path rather than forcing every project into one method. Embroidery and other specialist services remain available when the garment or brand look calls for them.
Bring these details to your project
- Artwork, color count and print placements
- Garment types, colors, size breakdown and quantities
- How the items will be worn and your desired print feel

FAQ
Which lasts longer?
Both can be durable when done properly and cared for. The best choice depends on garment and design.
Can you mix methods on one order?
Sometimes — for example, screen printing the front and adding names a different way. Ask when you request a quote.
Is there a minimum?
Quantity guidance depends on the method and project and is confirmed with your quote.
Not sure which method fits?
Send your artwork and quantity through the quote portal and the team will recommend a method.
